Episode #151 – Considerations For Basic Vehicle Kit

This week: I’m talking about the importance of kitting out your vehicle to be as comfortable as possible.

When it comes to selecting the equipment we use, immediate thoughts inevitably turn towards choosing the right cameras and lenses, etc. But it surely makes sense to also give some proper thought towards the vehicle you’ll be spending so much time in, too.

Great episode. I can really relate to this one Giles.
I’d like to suggest the following additions I like to carry.
First one would be an inverter, not too large, say 350-400W just enough to charge camera batteries and run a laptop.
A foot pump, its amazing how many people do not carry one of these.
Lastly a seasonal one that’s helped me out a couple of times over the years when the weather has been bad, a snow shovel. Apart from the above I carry everything else you do except a use a 12V kettle instead of a stove.

  2. Giles says:

Thanks for chipping in, Mark – I thought this one might resonate ;)

This are some fine points you mention… and you’re right – it’s amazing how any people don’t carry a foot pump these days.

I was talking with someone only the other day about adding my fold-up shovel later in the year. It is usually something I’d think about for camping trips, but definitely going to find its way into the car.

As for an inverter – again, well worth considering. Some of my battery chargers come supplied with (or are compatible with) car chargers, so that can be a way round it for some people – but then, they’re cheap enough, so why not just grab one to save the disappointment/inconvenience of benign left without power? ;)

    • Mark says:

Well you see the thing about shooting Canon is that a small inverter is cheaper than the 12V lead for my camera’s charger. lol.

  3. Giles says:

Well you know what they say – should have gone to Nikon ;) Although, in truth, I expect their prices are on a similar scale!

    Hey giles

Just catching up on your podcasts
I tend to save them all up for when I’m away in the rig
Then I can unleash them all to save me from boredom

Can’t really think of anything extra to add from what
You/mark have already pointed out but it’s good to refresh
The ideas.. And will probably give people new to this subject
    Some good ideas too.

P.s just downloaded the OS locate app you talked about
In the other podcast.. Will try buyout when home and back
In the beautiful Lake District ! :-)

    Keep em coming

    cheers

    Chris

    • Giles says:

      Hey Chris,

Good to hear from you again – how’s tricks? I’m glad you liked this episode.

The OS app really is well worth taking a look at – if for no other treason than peace of mind in the hills.

For reference to others reading this, the Ordnance Survey OS Locate app is well worth a look – here

      • Chris Sumner says:

Im good Thanks Giles, hope the family is all good?

looking forward to getting home on Thursday from work… 4 weeks off :-) and some trips planned in the lakes… of course its all weather depending!! fingers crossed I get a couple of nice days, if not I will turn it into a recce for future locations.

good to hear from you and keep the podcasts coming :-)

        • Giles says:

All well and good here, thanks. Busy, busy, busy.

Have a great holiday, and enjoy those lakes. And don’t worry about the weather – adds to the adventure if you have to overcome it ;)
