For The Love Of Macro Photography

Fun fact: When I was around 14 years old, about 2 years into what was then my current obsession for a hobby (photography), I started to take an interest in the natural world.

I would spend hours photographing subjects close-up (what we call ‘macro’ photography), delighting in the abstract colours, shapes and details of this unseen world.

As for wildlife – garden birds, the odd fox, anything in a nature reserve etc – all manner of creatures soon found their way onto my colour slides and black & white negatives.

Yes, I go back so far that digital cameras weren’t a thing yet!

I read the books and magazines, watched the tv shows, joined a camera club, went to talks, visited photography expos…. I just couldn’t get enough of photography!

Until, one day, with the pressure to pick a career path looming, I decided that wildlife photography seemed like a natural choice.

Ultimately, I didn’t follow through with that specialism – instead turning my hand to the areas of photography for business, the great outdoors and a smattering of other bits and bobs along the way.

Fast forward to the present day – some 20 years into my career as a photographer – and would you believe, I still get that youthful buzz when capturing pictures like the one you see here?!

This was just a quick snap on my phone, but with spring here and summer just around the corner… well, I think it might be time to get down on my knees with the ol’ camera in hand and indulge my love of the close-up world once again.
