TAP Jolly – Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? No problem! Here are a few answers to some of the most frequently-asked questions about The Active Photographer Jolly…

Just what is a TAP Jolly?

The Jolly is a weekend away, held deep within the beautiful British landscape. A chance to unwind and have fun – at the same time learning how to take great pictures. It gives you the perfect chance to completely indulge and immerse yourself in your enthusiasm for photography and the great outdoors.

When is the next Jolly taking place?

26th-28th April 2013.

Where is the next Jolly taking place?

In a beautiful woodland spot on the Dorset/Wiltshire border.

Is it easy to get to the site if I’m using public transport?

Indeed! The nearest train station is about 10 minutes away and is on the main line from London.

A taxi service is also available from the station.

How many people will be at the Jolly?

Just 6 places are available. Nice and cosy, much more informal than those big, group workshops you might be used to!

How much does it cost?

It’s a special introductory price for the first Jolly of 2013 – just £99 per person.

How long does the Jolly last?

Everyone turns up on the Saturday morning, ready to let the fun really begin at 10am. With tears in our eyes, we say cheerio around midday on the Sunday afternoon.

If you’d rather arrive on the Friday, that’s fine – so long as it’s after 3pm. And no, there’s no extra charge, you just have the chance to get more value for your hard-earned money!

What do I need to bring?

The last thing you want to do is be bogged down by equipment – both photographic and camping. So… keep it simple!

A digital camera (preferably a DSLR, though not essential), tent, sleeping bag, clothing, food. These are the basics.

Oh, and a sense of humour is essential!

Do I need to own a particular type of camera in order to join you on a Jolly?

Most people who attend the Jolly bring a DSLR and one or two lenses. If you use something more modest (for example, a point-and-shoot camera), that’s absolutely fine!

The Jolly weekends are not about who has the best kit or why you need X, Y and Z. The aim is for you to have a great time in the great outdoors, and to get the most out of the kit you use.

Do I need a tripod?

If you have one, bring it. We’ll be having fun with night-time photography, so keeping the camera steady is really important. If you don’t have a tripod, let me know and I’ll make sure there’s one available for you to use.

Can I bring my laptop?

Nope. Forget technology just for the weekend (except your camera and perhaps a phone). The Jolly is not another one of your typical “Open up Photoshop and let’s see what we can do with the pictures you shot today” workshops!

You’ll be learning how to get the best out of your camera whilst out and about, trying new techniques and improving upon pre-existing skills, all the time aiming to get it right in camera! Photoshop can wait until you get home.

What if I don’t have a tent?

At this point in the season, I’m afraid tents are not provided for attendees of the TAP Jolly. However, simple, affordable shelter is widely available from online and high street retailers and the same goes for sleeping bags.

If you’re unsure just which tent/sleeping bag is right for you, please feel free to ask and I’ll be more than happy to make recommendations.

Can I bring a camper van or caravan instead of a tent?

Nope. If you join us on a Jolly, it’s camping or nothing!

Are there washing facilities on site?

Yes. There are basic washing facilities on site – toilets, showers and wash basins. You will need to bring 2x £1 coins for each trip to the shower.

There are also sinks for you to wash any cooking equipment.

What food should I bring?

If you decide to turn up on the Friday afternoon, you will need to provide your own dinner.

If you arrive on the Saturday morning, you will most likely have already had breakfast – in which case, just bring a packed lunch.

One of the highlights of the Saturday night is a log-fire BBQ; all food will be supplied for this.

A simple breakfast will be supplied for the Sunday morning, too (usually in the form of bacon butties). With the Jolly wrapping up around midday, you might want to bring a packed lunch to enjoy before heading off.

I’m vegetarian – will I still be catered for at the Saturday night BBQ/Sunday breakfast?

Absolutely – I don’t want you missing out! Just make it clear when you book your place on the Jolly.

Do I need to bring any spending money?

Not really, no. The woodland where we will be camping is close to a working farm, which has a shop – should you wish to splash some cash. There is also a supermarket nearby if you need to stock up on supplies.

Will it be cold?

It can get a bit nippy in the woodland at night – but there will be a raging log fire for you to warm up next to during the evenings.

There are various ways to keep hold of that warmth when you finally head to bed, though – for example adding extra clothes or a fleece liner in your sleeping bag. Again, if you’re unsure, please ask for advice.

How do I pay and do I need to pay in advance?

Payment is simple – just use the secure Paypal button towards the bottom of the Jolly page. And yes, you do need to pay in advance, so that attendee numbers can be confirmed. Other than that, there’s no need to bring any money.

Please note that, because of booking technicalities at my end, all payments are non-refundable and non-transferable.

How do I get in touch with other questions?

Simple – the easiest way is to use the Contact Form!
