Sticky Tape To The Rescue!
It never ceases to amaze me that in this technological age of professional photography, where thousands of pounds can be spent on equipment in the blink of an eye, something as simple as electrical tape finds itself coming to the rescue time and again.
People often ask me just what is my ‘go-to’ kit. Of course, very often I will name a specific item such as a dependable lens or some outdoor gear – but always lurking in the background is one variety of sticky tape or another, just waiting to save the day.
In order of most often used, here is a selection of what you will typically find in my kit bag:
Electrical tape (assorted colours) – Used for everything from protecting leads and switches from accidental movement to securing lens hoods when they are likely to get knocked off in the course of a shoot.
Duct tape / gaffer tape (black, white, silver) – Used for securing heavier items such as clamps and brackets. This stuff is tough and resistant to moisture; just remember that it can often leave a sticky residue on items when removed.
Hazard tape (black/yellow) – Used whenever health safety is an important factor. Typically employed for taping down leads on the floor and marking out ‘safe zones’ around light stands when working in offices and areas with clumsy passers-by.
Zinc Oxide tape – Used for securing my wedding ring on cold days and when working in remote locations (especially if camping is involved). Also works in place of electrical tape at a push, if needs be.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the picture you see above… That was an impromptu repair job, fixing a lens hood in place shortly after its lock mechanism broke moments before a shoot!
